During my first tech-writing job, I penned a comic strip for the University of Florida’s otherwise staid data center. The two technical writers in our little group manned the help line, so we got to hear users’ problems in their own words. (Yes, I actually got the guy who I had to tell, “Press Enter.”)
The more interesting problems such as our pathetic response time or peculiar policies were featured in cartoon form in the monthly newsletter /Update. As the months went by, I found my cartoons popping up all over campus, tacked to boards or pasted to office doors. That was a terrific feeling!
